The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra presents the Chamber Concert “Serenades for the Soul” on Sunday, February 10th at 3:00 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Michgan City. Just in time for a romantic Valentine’s Day, be serenaded by the harmonious blend of voice, strings lute and guitar as the softer and more intimate side of the symphony is explored to provide a harmonious blend of songs and serenades.
Performing will be Christopher Chroniak, countertenor. Chroniak studied voice at the Ohio State University as a baritone. While there he performed Leporello in Don Giovanni, Begger in Old Maid and the Thief, and Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutti. With the Newton Opera Company in Massachusetts he sang Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, and Leader/Preacher in Down in the Valley. After earning a doctorate in psychology and establishing a private practice as a clinical psychologist, Chroniak resumed his vocal studies in earnest. His teacher introduced him to the repertoire of a countertenor and he realized that he had found his “true voice."
Also performing will be the Chicago Early Music Consort acclaimed as an ensemble of “imaginative” programming and “delicate and flawlessly-played music”. This group recreates the rich and diverse sounds of the late Renaissance and early Baroque chamber repertoire in a historically-informed manner. Founded by Gary Berkenstock, the consort performs throughout the Chicagoland and Wisconsin areas. The core ensemble consists of a “broken” consort of viola da gamba PHILLIP W. SERNA, soprano STEPHANIE SHEFFIELD, lute/theorbo JOEL SPEARS, and recorders G BERKENSTOCK.
The final portion of the afternoon’s music will be provided by the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra String Quartet featuring Beth Oseburg, violin; Tamara Stojanovic, violin; Monica Schafer, viola; and Sara Thomas, cello.
