Young Artist Competition
The auditions for the 2008 Florence Andrew Young Artist Competition sponsored by The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until noon, C.S.T. at the La Porte Presbyterian Church, 307 Kingsbury Avenue, La Porte, Indiana located at the corner of Kingsbury and Indiana Avenues in La Porte. Please keep in mind that by the time the competition is held, La Porte will be on Central Standard Time. The winner(s) will be featured at a Symphony concert in either November, 2008, February, 2009 or March, 2009. In addition to the opportunity to perform with the Symphony Orchestra, each winner will receive a $200.00 cash award.

RULES FOR THE COMPETITION ARE AS FOLLOWS

1. The competition is open to any young instrumental musician through grade 12 during the 2008 - 09 school year except that those who have been selected as winners may not enter the competition for two years after winning. (The competition is no longer open to vocal students.)

2. A student must be currently enrolled in a school music program or be an advanced private student. (Teacher verification is required on application.)

3. A student must be a full-time resident in Northwest Indiana (Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Porter, Marshall, Pulaski, St. Joseph or Starke County) or Southwest Michigan (Berrien or St. Joseph County).

4. A student must perform a movement from a concerto or other standard orchestral work of his or her choice with published accompaniment.

a. This music must be available for rental or purchase by the Symphony, verified as such by the student or the student’s teacher.

b. If a winning composition is in fact unavailable, that winner will forfeit and the first alternate will be declared the winner.

5. Entry fee is $15.00 and entries must be post-marked by May 1, 2007.

6. All contestants must provide an accompanist. A Young Chang six-foot baby grand piano and an upright accompaniment piano will be provided.

7. A total of two (2) copies of the solo music (with measures numbered) must be provided. Photo copies are acceptable. The entrant’s name may not appear anywhere on the music.

8. All pieces must be auditioned from memory.

9. Winner(s) will be notified of rehearsal times and concert dates by June, 2008.

10. Judges’ decisions are final.

11. Previous winner(s) is/are eligible.

12. Auditions are open only to the performing student and accompanist.
